Received a recording of my solo choreography and performance from the Champaign Art Salon. Truly excited to expand upon this concept and piece...developing the work into something larger. Reflecting upon this video, I am looking forward to more community opportunities. In venues such as this old Firestone Warehouse, connections are made with the space, your audience, your work, and your community that continue to inspire artists to do what we do!
A great local event that gave me an opportunity to create new work and become a part of the community! An old Firestone warehouse space was created into a gallery style event! Local artists showed photography, sculpture, paintings, music, and performance art. I was thrilled to be able to perform in Laura Chiaramonte's new work. It was a great industrial venue to do a site specific piece. Old tire stickers had been stuck to a wall over time in a particular corner over time. I knew this was the local that I wanted to be in! A photographer with digitally enhanced images hung his portraits on the wall, which provided the perfect partnership. Love being able to take a piece and adapt it to a certain location, and knowing that it is a piece that can transform from space to space! Fun to get down into the gritty floor in a pretty skirt.... Decided that a windy day and a green lawn would be a great way to get started on a new project. I created a choreography based on 'The Yellow Wallpaper' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Reading this story was inspired by a friend.... and was the perfect way to bring my current ideas together. First a skirt, then music, building choreography, onto creating a dance film. Ready to celebrate springtime and get out there and move! These still images were created from video clips as I was experimenting with how the environment and the skirt read on film. Getting working on an idea I have..... I have a great performance opportunity in the Champaign, IL community at an empty warehouse space. Totally my aesthetic....concrete, brick walls, cool grimy windows. Time to create a challenge and be a bit more conceptual. So here goes! I kept envisioning a big skirt that was a bit cumbersome but still provided the ability to move. Lots of texture, a bit of grit, and definitely something that I could handle making! Through general measurement ideas and a small budget; muslin was the best option. Layered with tulle and plastic tablecloth the creation is under way! What a wonderful way to revisit my roots! I was honored and excited to take part in the Paula Aubry School of Dance 'Celebrate the Journey - Dance 14'. Amy Morris created this event to give the dancers and community an opportunity to see a variety of genres of dance performance in their community. An evening consisted of local dance studios performing as well as guest artists such as myself and company performances by Visceral Dance Chicago. The show was followed by a day of master classes for the area kids to participate! What a great opportunity to give fresh ideas and new experiences in dance for these teens! |
